Illegal wildlife trafficking seizures in Europe

Overview

Customs officials in Europe have intercepted multiple shipments of illegal wildlife and protected species arriving via international airports.

In France, inspections at Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle Airport revealed emperor scorpions from Ghana hidden in a package with a false bottom, as well as 20 dried seahorses concealed within a rice cooker from China. Some of the scorpions died following their transfer to a zoo due to transport stress.

At Cologne/Bonn Airport in Germany, authorities seized more than 90 exotic animals hidden in the luggage of a 45-year-old Mexican firefighter traveling from Mexico City via Istanbul. The shipment consisted of 55 lizards, including iguanas and salamanders, and 37 venomous snakes, such as vipers and rattlesnakes, which are native to South American mountains. The animals were found concealed in shampoo bottles, cream containers, plastic boxes, and rolled-up socks.

During the inspection, authorities initially suspected drug smuggling after a swab test indicated the presence of cocaine. The reptiles were transported in cramped conditions without food or water. While veterinarians were called to provide care, approximately 30 of the animals died due to the stressful journey. The surviving animals were transferred to a snake farm in central Germany for recovery. Customs spokesperson Jens Ahland noted that the scale of the find was “unprecedented” for the airport. The individual was denied entry to Germany and repatriated to Istanbul while facing investigation. The individual claimed he was transporting the animals as a favor to a Brazilian acquaintance.
