Cusumano Etna Bianco wins Gambero Rosso White Wine of the Year
The Alta Mora Arrigo 2023 Etna Bianco Doc, produced by the Sicilian winery Cusumano, has been named the White Wine of the Year by Gambero Rosso. The wine also earned the ‘Tre Bicchieri’ distinction from the Guida Vini d’Italia 2027, the highest possible score.
Produced from Carricante grapes grown in the Arrigo district at 610 meters on the northern slope of Mount Etna, the wine is noted for its freshness and salinity. The vineyard sits on ancient volcanic soil consisting of sands and lava stones from an 1180 eruption. The region's significant temperature fluctuations between day and night allow for slow maturation, preserving the complexity of the indigenous volcanic grape.
Diego and Alberto Cusumano lead the winery, which has received multiple ‘Tre Bicchieri’ awards in previous years. The wine undergoes aging in a modern underground cellar regulated by volcanic rock to protect it from light and temperature shifts.
