CVG workers in Venezuela hold hunger strike over labor demands
Workers at the Corporación Venezolana de Guayana (CVG) in Puerto Ordaz are conducting a hunger strike and vigil to demand unpaid benefits and improved labor conditions. Union leader Daniel Romero has held CVG President Héctor Silva responsible for the deteriorating health of protesters.
One worker, Alejandro Lozada, was forced to end his hunger strike after being diagnosed with digestive hemorrhage, metabolic acidosis, and general decompensation. Other workers, including Hugo Medina and Tomás Medina, continue the protest. Labor leaders also reported severe shortages of medical supplies at the CVG hospital, noting that patients must purchase their own basic medical inputs.
The workers' demands include the payment of year-end bonuses, collective bargaining agreements, the restoration of health insurance (HCM), and educational benefits for employees' children. While negotiations regarding a $1,200 bonus are expected, union representatives emphasize that their demands are grounded in the Organic Law of Labor, Workers, and Female Workers.
