Venezuelan labor protests and union demands

Overview

Venezuelan labor organizations have initiated a series of mobilizations and formal demands aimed at securing economic reforms and protecting workers' rights. In late September, various labor groups, including the Comité Nacional de Conflicto de Trabajadores en Lucha and the Acuerdo Unitario de Trabajadores, called for a national day of protest. The movement sought to demand dignified wages, increased pensions, and an end to compensation policies based on bonuses. During this period, union representatives also defended leader Omar Marcano against allegations of fuel trafficking and terrorism, which they characterized as attempts to intimidate activists. By early October, the movement intensified as the Movimiento Sindical Constitucional (MSC) submitted a formal list of grievances to the Vice Presidency. These demands included emergency wage increases, the negotiation of the Petroleum Collective Contract, the repeal of specific labor instructions, and transparency regarding the Pension Fund. Additionally, unions have raised concerns over the disappearance of Orlando Ramírez, president of the Ministry of Transport Union, who has reportedly been missing since an alleged detention in September. In late October, the scope of the movement expanded to include political demands. The National Union Coalition of Workers sought an audience at the Miraflores Presidential Palace to advocate for presidential elections, salary increases, and the release of political prisoners. Concurrently, in Carabobo, public employees and nursing professionals demonstrated in Valencia, calling for dialogue with Governor Rafael Lacava to restore lost benefits. On October 29, workers organized a national day of protest, primarily driven by unions in the education, university, and healthcare sectors. In Falcón state, union leadership joined these movements to demand improved wages and dignity. In Guayana, employees of the Corporación Venezolana de Guayana (CVG) and its basic industries, such as Sidor, rejected institutional holiday festivities, viewing them as a diversion from labor disputes.
