Cyberbullying and online hate pose risks to youth mental health

Online hate and cyberbullying are identified as significant threats to the mental health and safety of children and adolescents. This phenomenon, which includes insulting, mocking, or intentionally humiliating others through offensive comments, compromising photos, or social exclusion, can lead to severe consequences such as depression, anxiety, isolation, and suicidal ideation.

Authorities emphasize that perpetrators are not anonymous or immune to consequences. Under Polish law, certain behaviors such as criminal threats (Article 190 of the Penal Code) can lead to fines or imprisonment. Victims are encouraged to document offensive messages, block aggressors, and report incidents to portal administrators or law enforcement.

Parents and educators are urged to build relationships based on trust and to monitor signs of emotional distress in young people. Experts recommend responding to aggression with calm, seeking help from trusted adults, and maintaining empathy and responsibility in both real-world and virtual environments.
