Cybercrime threats and mitigation strategies for businesses

Cybercriminals are increasingly targeting businesses and government agencies through deceptive tactics such as fake email alerts and impersonation. These scams often pressure users to update payment methods or click malicious links to steal personal information and credentials.

According to the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), business email compromise resulted in over $3 billion in reported losses in 2025, while tech and customer support scams added an additional $2.1 billion in damages. Because many of these attacks succeed without the use of malware, traditional antivirus software alone is often insufficient.

Effective anti-scam protection requires a multi-layered approach involving process, people, and technology. This includes establishing verification protocols for payments, providing employee training to recognize threats, and utilizing endpoint security tools to block phishing pages. Additionally, businesses may consider cyber liability insurance to manage risks, which can cover first-party expenses like recovery and business interruption, or third-party liabilities.
