Global cybersecurity and business email compromise threats
Overview
Cybersecurity experts and agencies are highlighting an increase in digital threats, specifically targeting individuals and organizations through impersonation and unauthorized access.
Early reports identified risks such as WhatsApp account monitoring via unauthorized QR code scanning and a rise in business email compromise (BEC) attacks. In Slovenia, police reported damages of 2.3 million euros in 2024 related to such scams, following a 5.7 million euro loss the previous year.
As the threat landscape evolves, data from the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) indicates that BEC resulted in over $3 billion in reported losses in 2025, with tech and customer support scams adding $2.1 billion in damages. Because these attacks often succeed without malware, experts recommend a multi-layered defense strategy. This includes employee training, verification protocols for payments, endpoint security tools, and the use of cyber liability insurance to manage recovery costs and third-party liabilities.
