Argentina mental health demand surges as hospitalizations rise 42%
A federal report coordinated by the Universidad Nacional de Lanús reveals a significant surge in mental health demand across Argentina. Data from 14 provinces, representing over 70% of the population, shows that outpatient consultations increased by 23% over the last year, while hospitalizations rose by 42% between 2023 and 2026.
Authorities noted a particular increase in demand among children and adolescents. In Buenos Aires province, Health Minister Nicolás Kreplak reported that mental health hospitalizations for minors under 18 rose by 110% between 2019 and 2025. Additionally, there is a growing trend of individuals losing private insurance and turning to the public health system for care.
The Asociación Argentina de Salud Mental has expressed deep concern regarding rising suicide rates. Official data indicates that 2025 saw 5,209 suicides, reaching a rate of 11.8 per 100,000 inhabitants, the highest in the historical series. The association is calling for comprehensive public policies, increased funding, and coordinated prevention efforts to address these complex social and economic drivers.
