Argentina mental health crisis and legislative response
Overview
Argentina is experiencing a significant surge in mental health demand. A federal report indicates that outpatient consultations increased by 23% over the last year, while hospitalizations rose by 42% between 2023 and 2026. There has been a notable increase in demand among children and adolescents, with mental health hospitalizations for minors under 18 in Buenos Aires province rising by 110% between 2019 and 2025.
Official data from the National Criminal Information System (SNIC) shows that 2025 saw 5,209 suicides, a rate of 11.8 per 100,000 inhabitants. This represents a 22.6% increase compared to the previous year and marks the largest year-on-year increase since 2017. The suicide rate has now more than tripled the homicide rate of 3.6 per 100,000. A particular concern is the impact on youth; in 2024, 45.3% of all suicides occurred among individuals aged 15 to 34. Observers link the crisis to socioeconomic factors such as precarious labor, housing, and social rights.
In response, deputies have introduced a bill to declare a “National Mental Health Emergency” for two years. The proposed legislation seeks to strengthen the public healthcare system by expanding assistance facilities, reinstating staff at the Hospital Laura Bonaparte, and reinforcing Interdisciplinary Residencies in Mental Health and Addictions (RISAM). The bill also aims to restore the mental health component of the Remediar Program, increase telephone assistance capacity, and ensure equitable access to psychotropic drugs and specialized interdisciplinary teams for children and adolescents at the primary care level.
