Cybersecurity risks accelerate due to AI and shrinking exploitation windows
Recent reports from Wiz Research and Gartner highlight a rapidly evolving cyber threat landscape driven by shrinking response windows and artificial intelligence.
Wiz Research reports that the window between vulnerability disclosure and active exploitation has dropped from over two years to just 21.5 days. To combat this, the firm suggests that security teams must move away from managing raw alert volumes and instead use environmental context—such as external reachability and sensitive data access—to prioritize actionable risks. Their analysis showed that applying these criteria eliminated more than half of initial high-priority findings.
Separately, Gartner identified AI-enabled discovery of cyber vulnerabilities as the most critical emerging risk for organizations worldwide in the second quarter of 2026. Based on a survey of 316 senior executives, Gartner warned that AI's ability to increase the efficiency of vulnerability discovery may outpace traditional risk management and remediation capabilities. The firm recommends that organizations recalibrate risk assessments, strengthen third-party controls, and accelerate automated remediation strategies to keep pace with AI-driven threats.
