Cybersecurity risks escalate as AI and IT/OT convergence accelerate attacks

The convergence of Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT) is increasing industrial vulnerability, as digital intrusions can now directly impact physical production and critical infrastructure. Experts warn that cyber incidents have evolved from purely technological concerns into direct risks to business continuity. In Chile, this shift coincides with the implementation of a new regulatory framework and the establishment of the National Cybersecurity Agency to oversee essential services.

Artificial intelligence is further accelerating the threat landscape, with AI-powered attacks increasing by 89% year-over-year. According to the CrowdStrike Global Threat Report 2026, the average time between initial compromise and lateral movement within an organization has dropped to 29 minutes, with some instances occurring in just 27 seconds. Data extraction speeds have also increased significantly, occurring roughly 72 minutes after initial access.

The economic impact is substantial; IBM estimates the average global cost of a data breach at US$4.99 million, rising to US$6 million when AI models are involved. Conversely, companies utilizing intensive AI and automation for defense can save an average of US$1.93 million per incident. Security specialists emphasize that defensive responses must now match the speed of AI-driven threats to be effective.
