Cybersecurity threats rise in Pakistan and the Philippines

Cybersecurity threats are escalating across South and Southeast Asia, with regulators and security firms warning of sophisticated phishing and ransomware campaigns.

In Pakistan, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued an alert regarding a surge in phishing attacks. These scams use deceptive emails, SMS, and phone calls to trick citizens into revealing banking details, passwords, and sensitive personal information. The PTA noted that attackers often use professional branding and a sense of urgency—such as threats of account suspension—to bypass critical thinking.

In the Philippines, a report from Viettel Cyber Security (VCS) revealed that over 335 million records were breached during the first half of 2026. The report documented 16,619 phishing cases and 21 ransomware incidents, resulting in the theft of 2.6 TB of sensitive data. Major sectors affected include finance, healthcare, and public services, with banks alone losing approximately 99 million records.

Criminals are increasingly leveraging generative AI and deepfakes to conduct impersonation scams, posing as government officials or bank staff to solicit one-time passwords (OTPs). In response, Philippine authorities are implementing stricter regulations, including the Anti-Financial Account Scamming Act, to strengthen national defenses.
