Cybersecurity trends for 2026 highlight AI risks and resource gaps
The cybersecurity landscape is shifting toward continuous risk management and identity governance as organizations expand cloud usage and integrate artificial intelligence. By 2026, security programs are expected to move away from isolated defense tactics toward scalable telemetry and automated investigation processes within Security Operations Centers (SOCs).
A Proofpoint ‘Voice of the CISO 2026’ report highlights significant challenges regarding generative AI. In Germany, 77% of CISOs identify generative AI as a security risk, a 22-percentage-point increase from the previous year. Furthermore, 75% of respondents expressed concern that employees might use generative AI in ways that jeopardize sensitive data, particularly regarding the loss of customer information.
Despite these growing threats, there is a notable resource gap. Approximately 65% of German CISOs expect to manage AI-related risks over the next two years without receiving additional personnel, budget, or specialized expertise. Consequently, 70% of CISOs have made the secure implementation of AI assistants, copilots, and automation a top priority.
