Cybersecurity workforce gap reaches 4.8 million unfilled positions

The global cybersecurity industry is facing a significant talent shortage, with approximately 4.8 million unfilled positions reported in the ISC2 2024 Cybersecurity Workforce Study. This gap is widening as digital threats become more sophisticated, impacting critical sectors such as healthcare, finance, and government.

Data indicates that only 69 percent of organizations have entry-level cybersecurity professionals, a figure that decreases to 64 percent in smaller companies. Furthermore, nearly half of all companies report taking more than six months to fill a cybersecurity vacancy. The shortage is driven by a persistent skills gap, where employers require professionals with hands-on, applied experience rather than just academic credentials.

Industry leaders, including Cheryl Martin, CISO at Company86, note that the field requires professionals capable of navigating constant technological changes and solving complex, evolving problems. Addressing this crisis involves a focus on higher education and specialized training programs to prepare the next generation for the current threat landscape.
