Global cybersecurity workforce talent shortage

The global cybersecurity industry is experiencing a significant talent shortage, with reports indicating approximately 4.8 million unfilled positions. This gap is driven by a persistent skills mismatch, as employers increasingly prioritize hands-on, applied experience over academic credentials alone.

Data shows that only 69 percent of organizations possess entry-level cybersecurity professionals, a figure that drops to 64 percent in smaller companies. The shortage impacts critical sectors including healthcare, finance, and government, with nearly half of all companies reporting that it takes more than six months to fill a vacancy.

In response to these challenges, there is a growing demand for remote roles, with the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projecting a 29 percent growth rate for information security analyst positions through 2034. To enter the field, professionals are encouraged to focus on foundational skills in networking, operating systems, cloud fundamentals, and scripting. Additionally, businesses are utilizing domain-based scans and free cybersecurity assessments to identify publicly visible vulnerabilities, such as leaked credentials and exposed internet-facing systems.
