Naxos fuel smuggling ring dismantled by Greek police
The Hellenic Police Internal Affairs Service has dismantled a criminal organization involved in the smuggling of maritime fuels in the Cyclades, specifically on the island of Naxos. Following an investigation triggered by anonymous complaints, authorities conducted an operation on Tuesday, October 6, resulting in the arrest of seven individuals, including six private citizens and one customs official. Three additional individuals, including another customs employee, are also under investigation.
The group allegedly operated by illegally transferring tax-exempt maritime fuel from vessels entitled to exemptions to other boats using specialized pumps and flexible hoses. This method allowed them to evade the Special Consumption Tax and VAT. Authorities have identified at least 13 instances of fuel smuggling and 15 cases of bribery involving customs officials, where payments of 10 to 30 euros were reportedly made during legitimate supply operations.
The organization, which appears to have been active since at least August 2025, included several key roles: an 80-year-old individual managing companies for tourist and fishing vessels, a 50-year-old captain coordinating operations, and various crew members. During the police raid, officers caught a fuel transfer of 3,650 liters in progress. Seized items included over 100,000 euros, weapons, and ancient artifacts. The suspects face charges including criminal organization, forgery, bribery, and violations of maritime and customs codes.
