Greek organized smuggling and tax evasion crackdowns

Overview

Greek authorities have conducted a series of operations targeting organized smuggling and tax evasion networks.

In the Cyclades region, the Hellenic Police Internal Affairs Service dismantled a maritime fuel smuggling ring in Naxos. Investigations triggered by anonymous complaints revealed the group had been active since at least August 2025. Members allegedly used specialized pumps and flexible hoses to illegally transfer tax-exempt maritime fuel between vessels to evade Special Consumption Tax and VAT. Authorities identified at least 13 instances of fuel smuggling and 15 cases of bribery involving customs officials, where payments of 10 to 30 euros were reportedly made during legitimate operations.

The operation, which caught a transfer of 3,650 liters in progress, resulted in the arrest of seven individuals, including six private citizens and one customs official. Three additional suspects, including another customs employee, remain under investigation. Seized items included over 100,000 euros, weapons, and ancient artifacts. Suspects face charges including criminal organization, forgery, bribery, and violations of maritime and customs codes.

In a coordinated raid involving the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE), authorities also dismantled an organized smuggling ring in Aspropyrgos. Utilizing AADE information systems, officials raided a parking business, seizing 9,100 liters of fuel, 112 bottles of smuggled vodka, and a large quantity of smuggled cigarettes. The operation led to the confiscation of four liquid gas tankers, 11 vehicles showing signs of tampering, and various industrial equipment. A 6mm pistol and 89 rounds of 9mm ammunition were recovered. Four individuals were arrested on felony charges including tax evasion, smuggling, vehicle tampering, and weapons law violations, while investigations continue to identify three additional suspects.
