Cyclospora outbreak sickens thousands in 34 US states

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported a multi‑state outbreak of cyclosporiasis caused by the Cyclospora cayetanensis parasite. As of mid‑July 2026, 1,645 laboratory‑confirmed cases and more than 5,100 suspected infections have been recorded across 34 states, with about 145 hospitalisations. Michigan is the epicentre, accounting for over 3,300 confirmed and probable cases. Health officials suspect leafy greens – especially lettuce and salad mixes – as the most likely vehicle, and are investigating a possible link to Taco Bell restaurants that have temporarily removed lettuce, cilantro, onions and guacamole from some locations. No single food source, grower or supplier has been identified, and the investigation remains ongoing. Symptoms include explosive watery diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, nausea, fatigue, weight loss and dehydration; they typically appear one to two weeks after exposure and can persist for weeks without treatment. The infection is treated with a specific antibiotic regimen, and authorities advise thorough washing of fresh produce, good hand hygiene and prompt medical care for persistent diarrhoea.
