Cyclospora outbreak in US exceeds 17,000 cases
The United States is experiencing its largest-ever cyclosporiasis outbreak, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reporting 17,180 laboratory-confirmed cases across 48 states and Washington, D.C. as of August 24. The parasitic illness has caused 922 hospitalizations and two deaths.
Michigan has emerged as the epicenter of the outbreak, accounting for 14,277 cases. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has linked the largest cluster to iceberg lettuce grown in central Mexico and processed by Taylor Farms. This specific cluster has been associated with 10,930 cases and 454 hospitalizations across 17 states.
While health officials note that the pace of new infections is slowing, experts advise caution. Food safety specialists from Tufts Medical Center suggest that while it is generally safe to consume lettuce following the recall of contaminated Taylor Farms products, the risk of encountering other tainted items in the global supply chain remains a factor.
