Taylor Farms lettuce linked to nationwide cyclosporiasis outbreak

A widespread cyclosporiasis outbreak linked to iceberg lettuce has sickened thousands across the United States. Since May 1, health officials have reported 15,716 laboratory-confirmed cases and 11,841 suspected cases across 47 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. The outbreak has resulted in 828 hospitalizations and at least two deaths, both occurring in Michigan.

Federal investigators from the FDA and CDC have traced the source to processed iceberg lettuce from a Taylor Farms facility in central Mexico. The product was distributed through various channels, including restaurants like Taco Bell and retailers such as Walmart. Taco Bell reportedly removed lettuce from its outlets as a precaution following the investigation.

In Michigan, the impact has been particularly severe, with 14,277 reported cases and 335 hospitalizations. Investigations revealed that Michigan officials had to request supply-chain records from Taco Bell three times before federal regulators could successfully trace the source of the contamination. The FDA has initiated on-site inspections at the Mexican facility, which had not received a U.S. inspection in seven years.
