A major cyclosporiasis outbreak in the United States, linked to iceberg lettuce imported from Mexico by Taylor Farms, has sickened thousands and resulted in multiple deaths. While the CDC has reported over 13,000 lab-confirmed cases across 47 states, some regional reports, such as in Michigan, indicate much higher local figures. The outbreak has prompted FDA investigators to travel to Taylor Farms' processing facilities in Mexico to conduct inspections.

In addition to the parasitic infection, Taylor Farms has also recalled products containing jalapeños due to a separate salmonella outbreak. These consecutive foodborne illness incidents have raised significant concerns regarding the U.S. food supply chain and the FDA's ability to oversee imported produce. Experts point to a 22% decrease in FDA employment in 2026 and a nearly 13% drop in foreign food-facility inspections in fiscal year 2025 as factors that may have weakened regulatory oversight at a time when U.S. reliance on Mexican agricultural imports has increased significantly.
