Cyprus: 1974 Turkish invasion and population displacement

The 1974 Turkish military invasion of Cyprus, conducted in two phases on July 20 and August 14, resulted in massive population displacements and significant political shifts. Between 162,000 and 170,000 Greek Cypriots were forced to abandon their homes in the northern part of the island, while approximately 45,000 to 60,000 Turkish Cypriots moved to the north.

Following the invasion, the Third Vienna Agreement in 1975 facilitated an organized movement of populations, effectively cementing the division of the island. The number of Greek Cypriots and Maronites remaining in the occupied territory declined sharply over the following decades, dropping from roughly 20,000 initially to 347 by 2012.

In response to the conflict, a tripartite conference was held in Geneva on July 25, 1974, involving the foreign ministers of Greece, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. This led to a July 30 report that established a ceasefire line, a security zone, and recognized the existence of two autonomous administrations: one Greek Cypriot and one Turkish Cypriot.
