1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus

Late July 2026 marked the 52nd anniversary of the Turkish invasion of northern Cyprus with a series of commemorations across Greece, the island and the diaspora. Greek Air Force pilots recalled a 1974 aerial clash in which they shot down two Turkish F‑102 jets over the Aegean, linking the memory to broader Greek national narratives. The Cyprus Peace Council issued a statement recalling the thousands killed, missing and displaced on 20 July 1974 and reaffirming its support for a bi‑communal, bi‑zonal federation under UN resolutions. He described his unit’s rapid mobilisation on 20 July 1974, the convoy’s movement toward the General Staff headquarters, Turkish aircraft overhead, low‑altitude bombing, the loss of the sole 30‑mm anti‑aircraft gun, and the forced abandonment of vehicles at Kontemenos where troops sought shelter behind a house wall.
