Cyprus AKEL chief urges resumption of talks and preservation of positions after UN and EU envoy visits

General Secretary Stefanos Stefanos of Cyprus' AKEL said that continuing negotiations from the point where they stopped and safeguarding the positions taken is the only path to a solution. He made the remarks after the National Council concluded and after political leaders were briefed by the President on the recent visit of the United Nations Secretary‑General and the European Commission envoy to Cyprus.

Stefanos highlighted that the UN Secretary‑General has publicly announced the intention to convene an informal expanded meeting to restart talks, focusing on issues left unresolved since the 2017 Crans‑Montana conference. He added that the UN will intensify efforts to create the necessary conditions for such a meeting, but stressed that political will – especially from Turkey – is essential for any desired outcome.
