Dimis Mavropoulos dies in Cyprus yacht storm
A severe storm in Cyprus led to a fatal maritime accident near Cape Greco and Konnos Bay. Dimis Mavropoulos, a 76-year-old prominent businessman and former rally champion, died after his luxury yacht was destroyed by heavy waves and high winds.
During the incident, at least three vessels were caught in the storm. Two yachts were driven against the rocks and became unusable. Mavropoulos was found unconscious in the water and passed away in the hospital despite rescue efforts involving helicopters, police, and military units. His partner and daughter were rescued from the sea and treated for injuries at Nicosia General Hospital.
Authorities are investigating the exact circumstances of the tragedy. Witnesses described a chaotic scene where waves repeatedly struck the vessels, with one witness reporting seeing Mavropoulos calling for help before the boat broke apart.
