Cyprus maritime accident at Cape Greco

Overview

A severe storm near Cape Greco and Konnos Bay in Cyprus resulted in a fatal maritime accident involving several vessels. The storm destroyed a luxury yacht and led to the death of Dimis Mavropoulos, a businessman and former rally champion, who was found unconscious in the water and later died in the hospital.

Rescue efforts involving military units, police, and helicopters successfully rescued Mavropoulos’s partner and daughter, who were treated for injuries. An autopsy conducted by forensic doctors confirmed that Mavropoulos, a 77-year-old board member of the Limassol Tourism Development and Promotion Company, died of drowning. The findings noted multiple bodily injuries consistent with “heavy sea turbulence and an accidental vessel collision.” Reports indicate he was thrown into the sea while attempting to steer his boat toward deeper waters to avoid the rocks.

His funeral is scheduled for Thursday, September 3, 2026, at the Holy Church of Agios Kosmas Aitolos in Limassol. In a tribute to his love for life, his family has requested that attendees wear colorful clothing instead of traditional black.
