Cyprus dispute: Hristodulidis presents 19 proposals to National Council

Diplomatic efforts regarding the Cyprus dispute have intensified following recent meetings in New York. Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Hristodulidis presented 19 proposals to the Greek Cypriot National Council, detailing his discussions with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Personal Envoy Maria Angela Holguin. Spokesperson Konstantinos Letimbiotis emphasized the Greek Cypriot side's commitment to the process, suggesting that progress requires constructive attitudes and EU support for UN efforts.

In response to these developments, international relations expert Dr. Erhan Erçin expressed skepticism regarding the possibility of a successful path forward with the current Greek Cypriot leadership. Erçin characterized Hristodulidis’s recent actions, including requests for trilateral meetings, as being driven by domestic political calculations. He argued that the Greek Cypriot administration maintains an obstructive policy not only toward Turkish Cypriots but also regarding Turkey-EU relations, such as the updating of the Customs Union.

Political leaders within the Greek Cypriot community, including Annita Dimitriu, have called for more substantive action to create the preconditions for renewed negotiations, noting that the current period is a critical juncture as the UN Secretary-General’s term approaches its end.
