Cyprus leaders meet to discuss new settlement proposals

Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman held a meeting to discuss new proposals regarding the Cyprus settlement. The discussions focused on three primary areas: methodology for future negotiations, substantive issues, and Confidence Building Measures (CBMs).

Christodoulides described the meeting as “good” and expressed optimism that the new ideas could lead to positive developments as early as next week, provided there is sufficient political will. Erhürman noted the meeting was better than previous encounters and is currently reviewing the proposals. Erhürman previously indicated readiness to agree on six of the seven points requested by the UN Secretary-General, which include topics such as demining, sports, and mechanisms for disaster and migration management.

Despite the dialogue, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has ruled out holding an expanded meeting in New York during the upcoming UN General Assembly high-level week, stating that significant work remains. Christodoulides is scheduled to meet Guterres on September 24 in New York. Meanwhile, Greece has expressed its commitment to ensuring any future enlarged meeting involving the guarantor powers is successful, while cautioning against attempts to create “faits accomplis” on the ground.
