Cyprus earthquake risks require urgent urban planning, warns Chamber of Civil Engineers

The Chamber of Civil Engineers (KTMMOB İMO) has issued a warning regarding the earthquake risks in Cyprus, emphasizing that the region's seismic vulnerability cannot be ignored. The organization highlighted that increasing urban density in certain areas must be addressed through the lens of earthquake safety to prevent potential loss of life.

In a statement marking the 27th anniversary of the Marmara earthquake, the Chamber noted that unplanned urbanization and inadequate structural safety were primary causes of casualties in past disasters. They stressed that urban planning, the determination of construction density, and the creation of new building zones must incorporate earthquake scenarios as fundamental elements.

To mitigate risks, the Chamber called for an effective and sustainable building inspection system. They argued that safety requires competent engineering services and strict oversight throughout all stages, from design and material selection to construction and completion. Additionally, they recommended evaluating the existing building stock based on scientific and engineering principles to identify and reinforce or replace risky structures.
