Turkish earthquake safety and building regulation concerns
Overview
The Chamber of Civil Engineers has petitioned the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change to perform earthquake safety inspections on buildings that obtained ‘Building Registration Certificates’ through the ‘Zoning Peace’ regulation.
Board member Burkay Güçyetmez noted that these certificates were issued based on owner declarations rather than technical audits for non-compliant structures. The Chamber emphasized that despite a July 2024 Constitutional Court ruling affirming the state’s responsibility to protect the right to life through inspections, no significant studies have assessed the seismic resilience of these specific buildings. The organization is calling for increased transparency and urgent risk controls due to the high number of structures located in earthquake-prone zones.
