Cyprus Energy Minister Michalis Damianos: More Power Interconnections Needed, Fuel Supply Secure

Energy Minister Michalis Damianos said that, because Cyprus is an electrically isolated state, additional interconnections are essential. He confirmed that a feasibility study for a Cyprus‑Lebanon electricity link will be financed by the World Bank, noting that the project is not EU‑funded and that a detailed benefit analysis will follow the study. The minister also mentioned that the Cyprus‑Greece interconnection request has already been submitted to the European Investment Bank and is expected to be updated by the end of the year.

Damianos reassured that there is no current problem with fuel or electricity supply in Cyprus, although jet‑fuel could become a concern in the longer term. He pointed to recent declines in international fuel prices after cease‑fire talks and said the government can adjust fuel taxes. The electricity system operator expects no summer shortages, and a new 120 MW battery storage system is slated for delivery in January and will be operational before the summer of 2027, enhancing grid stability.
