Cyprus enters critical week of pension reform consultations

Cyprus is entering a decisive week of consultations regarding proposed pension reforms. Key stakeholders are engaging in high-level meetings to address the government's legislative framework before its scheduled submission to Parliament on September 24.

On one front, the Cyprus Workers' Confederation (OEB), led by Giorgos Pantelidis, met with President Nikos Christodoulides to discuss concerns. OEB has established red lines, specifically opposing increases in social contributions and insisting that welfare funds maintain their voluntary character. Simultaneously, employers are advocating for reforms that consider public finances and business competitiveness, while also raising issues regarding labor costs, the national minimum wage, and staffing shortages in health and transport sectors.

On another front, the Social Insurance Fund's sustainability is a primary focus for political and social partners. The Social Democratic Party (SEK) has initiated a series of meetings with political parties, including the Democratic Rally (DISY), to refine the legislation. SEK representatives have expressed concerns regarding the long-term impact on current and future retirees, particularly regarding the transition period and potential vulnerabilities for those retiring before age 63. The Labor Advisory Body is also conducting intensive twice-weekly sessions to analyze the bill's complexities.
