Cyprus faces pension reform demands and cost of living protests
Cyprus is experiencing several significant political and economic developments. The AKEL party and PEO have called for substantial social reforms regarding the pension system, specifically addressing the adequacy of current incomes, the protection of retirees, and the potential 12% proportional reduction for those retiring before age 65.
In response to the rising cost of living, AKEL and affiliated organizations have scheduled a protest outside the Ministry of Finance in Nicosia. Their demands include a permanent 5% VAT on electricity, interventions regarding fuel and heating costs, and increased support for low-income households and housing.
In domestic party politics, DISY President Annita Demetriou has announced her intention to seek the party's official endorsement, triggering discussions regarding the 2028 presidential elections. Meanwhile, in the business sector, Petrolina reported a first-half net profit of €9.94 million for 2026, driven by a 56% increase in turnover following its acquisition of eWise.
Additionally, environmental concerns are rising as European marine heatwaves, which have reached record levels in some regions, prompt warnings about the potential impact on Mediterranean marine ecosystems and local fisheries.
