Cyprus Foreign Minister urges UN to provide negotiation framework

Cyprus Republic Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kombos has called on UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to present a strategic framework to restart negotiations regarding the Cyprus dispute. Kombos argued that the diplomatic process is not stagnant, but rather awaits a document from the UN that outlines the strategic points of disagreement between the parties.

Kombos suggested that such a framework could follow the logic of the 2017 report, which identified six key areas for potential agreement. He questioned why the Secretary-General has not yet taken this step to facilitate a breakthrough.

The Foreign Minister attributed the current deadlock to the stance of Ankara, stating that Turkey’s insistence on a two-state solution and sovereign equality prevents the resumption of talks. He emphasized that the Greek Cypriot side remains ready to negotiate within the framework of UN Security Council resolutions.
