Cyprus funeral director alleges morgue and service irregularities

Funeral director Vana Kekkouri has raised serious allegations regarding the management of morgues and funeral services in Cyprus. Speaking on the Sigma television program ‘Mesimeri kai Kati’, Kekkouri described systemic dysfunction, delays, and irregularities in the receipt and delivery of remains.

The complaints follow a recent incident involving the disappearance of a body from the Nicosia General Hospital morgue. Kekkouri alleged that a private funeral provider, who reportedly wears a police vest and claims to work for the authorities to gain access to various locations, was involved in transporting the deceased from Paphos General Hospital to Nicosia.

Kekkouri further alleged that this specific provider has been accused of transporting bodies without organs and questioned the legality of the professional licenses being issued. She characterized the current state of hospital morgue operations as chaotic, stating, ‘It is a daily phenomenon for us, it is so chaotic in the hospitals that we cannot work.’
