Cyprus morgue mismanagement and missing body investigation
Overview
Cyprus police have launched an investigation into the disappearance of a British national’s body from the Nicosia General Hospital morgue. The deceased had been transferred from Paphos to Nicosia because the Paphos Hospital morgue has been out of operation for several months. A funeral director discovered the body was missing without any official record of its movement, prompting authorities to investigate whether staff moved the remains without following proper procedures.
Following this incident, funeral director Vana Kekkouri has alleged systemic dysfunction and irregularities within the country’s morgue and funeral service management. Speaking on the television program ‘Mesimeri kai Kati’, Kekkouri described the hospital morgue operations as “so chaotic in the hospitals that we cannot work.”
Kekkouri further alleged that a private funeral provider, who reportedly uses a police vest to gain access to locations, was involved in the transport of the deceased from Paphos to Nicosia. She also raised concerns regarding the legality of professional licenses and accused certain providers of transporting bodies without organs.
