Cyprus health officials warn of West Nile Virus risk

Health officials and political representatives in Cyprus are issuing urgent warnings following West Nile Virus cases and a fatality in the Nicosia region of South Cyprus. Authorities emphasize that because mosquitoes do not respect political or administrative borders, preventive measures must be implemented immediately in Northern Cyprus to avoid similar outbreaks.

Nicosia Turkish Municipality Mayor Mehmet Harmancı stated that the municipality is increasing measures, particularly in areas near the border, by identifying mosquito breeding sites such as drains, stagnant water, and unmaintained pools. He noted that the municipality is working in coordination with the Ministry of Health to conduct biological and chemical controls.

The Cyprus Turkish Medical Association (KTTB) has advised the public on individual protection, noting that there is no vaccine or specific medicine for the virus. Experts recommend using EPA-registered insect repellents containing active ingredients like DEET, Picaridin, or IR3535. They also advise citizens to empty standing water from containers like flowerpots and buckets, and to use mosquito nets to protect children and vulnerable individuals.
