Cyprus electricity grid restores capacity as repairs to Dhekelia and Vasiliko units progress

The Cyprus transmission system operator (ΔΣΜΚ) instituted rotating power cuts on Wednesday after simultaneous faults disabled two generation units at the Dhekelia and Vasiliko power stations. Four consumer groups across the island experienced outages lasting no more than 22‑25 minutes as demand surged amid high temperatures.

Assistant operations director Haris Zavallis said repairs are expected to be completed on Thursday, which should raise available generation capacity from 1,083 MW to about 1,248 MW and provide sufficient reserve to avoid further load‑shedding. The operator noted that the ageing generators were under scheduled maintenance and that the prolonged heat may have contributed to the failures. Consumers are divided into 22 groups nationwide, allowing the operator to switch off supply by group to protect grid stability. The authority also urged households to use electricity prudently during peak hours (18:00‑22:00).
