Cyprus electricity grid instability

Overview

Cyprus has experienced significant electricity grid instability due to technical failures and generation issues.

In late July, the Cyprus transmission system operator implemented rotating power cuts across 22 consumer groups following simultaneous faults at the Dhekelia and Vasiliko power stations. These outages occurred during high temperatures, and officials expected repairs to restore capacity from 1,083 MW to approximately 1,248 MW.

By late August, widespread outages persisted in southern Cyprus caused by a coordination failure between solar power plants and the energy coordination center, resulting in a loss of 100 megawatts of production. The disruption affected areas including Nicosia and Limassol, leading to incidents such as people being trapped in elevators. To mitigate the crisis, the southern authority purchased 30 megawatts from the north, though the interconnected nature of the grids meant the issue impacted the entire island. The electricity authority has since established backup connections between solar plants and the control center to prevent further recurrence.
