Cyprus jet ski safety legislation remains inactive

New legislation intended to tighten safety regulations and increase penalties for recreational craft in Cyprus remains inactive as the Ministry of Shipping awaits necessary regulatory adjustments. Although the law has been passed, it is not expected to take effect until 2026.

Following a recent incident in the Pernera area involving a minor operating a jet ski, official sources clarified that current laws allow adults to rent and operate jet skis without a license under specific conditions. While individuals under 18 may ride as passengers, they are strictly prohibited from operating the vessels.

Rental businesses are required to verify the identity of renters, record their details in a mandatory logbook, and provide safety briefings. Both the employee and the renter must sign a declaration confirming that safety instructions were provided. Companies also bear the responsibility of monitoring vessel use to ensure compliance with safety rules.
