Cyprus Justice Minister reviews new prison plans and asset forfeiture laws
Cyprus Justice and Public Order Minister Kostas Fytiris announced that final decisions regarding the construction of a new correctional facility will be made following the completion of a master plan and related studies. While Mati was initially a priority, high infrastructure costs have led officials to consider Agios Sozomenos as a primary alternative. These studies are being conducted with the support of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
The Minister stated that the goal is to begin construction by the end of 2027. He also committed to presenting the master plan to affected municipalities to gather their feedback.
Additionally, Fytiris emphasized the importance of a proposed bill regarding asset forfeiture. He described the ability to follow the money and seize unjustified assets without a prior conviction as a ‘huge weapon’ in the fight against organized crime and its leadership.
