Cyprus leaders reject further concessions, cite Makarios legacy amid Turkish provocations

Archbishop George of Cyprus urged the island not to make any further compromises on the Cyprus issue, invoking the legacy of the first President Archbishop Makarios III. He criticised recent UN Secretary‑General António Guterres statements as seeking “middle‑ground” solutions that would not be sustainable, and called for the full application of European Union rights for all Cypriot citizens.

President Nikos Christodoulides condemned recent Turkish provocations, including drone incursions over a municipal event in Deryneia, describing them as unacceptable violations. He reaffirmed respect for Makarios’ legacy, said the incidents underscore the need for continued diplomatic engagement with the United Nations and the EU throughout August, and pledged to defend Cyprus’ international standing.
