Cyprus leaders schedule Aug. 26 meeting on reunification talks

Turkish Cypriot President Tufan Erhürman and Greek Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides will meet on 26 August at 16:00 in the United Nations‑controlled buffer zone on Cyprus. The talks, overseen by UN Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres, aim to discuss confidence‑building measures and the methodology for a larger “five‑plus‑one” meeting that would include the island’s two communities, the three guarantor powers (Greece, Turkey, the United Kingdom) and the UN.

Both sides have agreed to hold regular contacts; Erhürman has proposed weekly leader‑to‑leader meetings, a suggestion echoed by the UN chief during his recent visit. The Greek Cypriot side, represented by press office director Victor Papadopoulos, is awaiting a response from the Turkish Cypriot side to confirm the schedule. The meeting is seen as a step toward reviving negotiations on the long‑standing Cyprus problem.
