Cyprus leaders to meet August 26 following stalled negotiations
Following a visit by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, attention has shifted to a scheduled meeting on August 26 between Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodulidis and Turkish Cypriot President Tufan Erhürman.
Reports from the Fileleftheros newspaper indicate that recent discussions between negotiator Menelaos Menelaou and Presidential Undersecretary Mehmet Dânâ failed to produce concrete results. While the Greek Cypriot side has proposed intensifying contact between leaders to once or twice a week, the Turkish Cypriot side has reportedly focused on negotiation methodology and procedures.
Disagreements also persist regarding the opening of new border crossings. Although UN efforts have been made to establish a connection between Athienu and Aglantzia via Piroi, no agreement has been reached. The Turkish Cypriot leadership is noted to be focusing on methodology, a move that some observers suggest may delay potential UN-led 5+1 format meetings.
