Cyprus marks 52nd anniversary of the Attila II invasion
On the 52nd anniversary of the second phase of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, known as Attila II, political leaders and institutions have issued statements regarding the ongoing occupation and historical memory.
Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias emphasized that the Cyprus issue remains a matter of illegal military occupation of a significant portion of the Republic of Cyprus, a sovereign member of the European Union. He paid tribute to the Greek and Cypriot citizens who died fighting for the island's freedom and noted the enduring issue of missing persons.
The Presidency of the Republic of Cyprus reiterated its commitment to a free and reunified homeland, stating that the 1974 invasion forcibly divided the country, displaced thousands, and continues to shape its modern history. The Presidency highlighted that Turkish forces occupied key areas including Famagusta and Morphou, establishing the Attila line.
In Northern Cyprus, Prime Minister Ünal Üstel commemorated the victims of the 1964 Cengiz Topel incident and the 1974 massacres in Muratağa, Sandallar, and Atlılar, where 126 unarmed civilians were killed. He expressed determination to continue the struggle against isolation and embargoes with the support of Turkey.
Historical accounts of the operation note that the second phase began on August 14, 1974, following the failure of Geneva negotiations. The operation, signaled by the code 'Ayşe can go on holiday,' resulted in Turkey controlling approximately 37% of the island's territory.
