Cyprus Minister Ioannou Urges New UN Initiative for Island Reunification

Interior Minister Konstantinos Ioannou addressed a commemorative ceremony for the victims of the Mia Miliá tragedy, reaffirming Cyprus’s steadfast commitment to a comprehensive, sustainable and functional solution to the island’s division. He highlighted that, 52 years after the 1974 invasion, the consequences of the ongoing occupation still affect the country and its people.

Ioannou said the government will capitalise on a new United Nations‑backed initiative, noting encouragement from the UN Secretary‑General and stressing respect for EU principles, values and law. He called for the resumption of substantive negotiations under the agreed framework, aiming to end the occupation, secure freedom of movement for all lawful residents and achieve the reunification of Cyprus.

The minister stressed that honoring the memory of those who fell requires persistent, responsible effort to create conditions for a durable settlement that guarantees safety, security and prosperity for all Cypriots.
