Cyprus Minister Says Turkey's Intransigence Blocks Reunification Efforts

Cyprus' Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry Michalis Damianos reiterated that Turkey's refusal to compromise remains the chief obstacle to progress on the Cyprus issue. He restated the Republic of Cyprus' commitment to a reunified island grounded in international law, UN Security Council resolutions, agreed solution frameworks and EU principles.

Damianos made the remarks at the annual memorial for anti‑naval officer Eleftherios Chandrinos and the fallen 1974 paratroopers, held at the Saint Kendeos church in Paphos and presided over by Metropolitan Gregory. He highlighted the European Union's heightened involvement, the recent appointment of an EU Special Representative for Cyprus, and the support of the UN Secretary‑General, noting that a visit by Antonio Guterres underscored the importance of ongoing diplomatic processes.

Referring to the 1974 Turkish invasion, Damianos said the wounds of occupation remain open, with thousands of displaced persons still denied the right of return and families of the missing still awaiting answers. He paid tribute to Chandrinos' courageous actions during the invasion and honoured the fallen paratroopers for their sacrifice.
