Cyprus moves closer to Schengen entry as EU commission report flags progress and social gaps

The European Commission is set to present its report on Cyprus’s accession to the Schengen free‑travel area. Commission President for Migration Magda Brunner told reporters that joining Schengen would be “a significant step forward for the European Union,” but stressed that the final decision on timing lies with the Council, not the Commission. The report is expected soon, and Cypriot officials indicated that the island aims to meet the required standards by the end of 2026.

While the document praises Cyprus’s fiscal performance and defence spending, it also highlights serious shortcomings in the social realm. The Commission notes limited effectiveness of social transfers, inadequate long‑term care, a shortage of affordable housing and rising energy poverty, warning that strong financial numbers do not automatically translate into improved living standards for vulnerable groups.

Cyprus’s Justice Minister emphasized the progress made since 2004 and expressed confidence that the country will become a full Schengen member once the required criteria are fulfilled.
