Cyprus moves toward Schengen zone integration

The European Commission has adopted the 2025 Schengen Evaluation Report, concluding that Cyprus meets the technical criteria for joining the Schengen area. Commission spokesperson Markus Lammert said the report “will be presented to the European Council in September” and noted that “the integration would be an important step for both the country and the European Union.”

The report is not a final decision; accession still requires unanimous political approval by all EU member states. Discussions also focus on the status of the island’s Green Line and the rights of Turkish‑Cypriot residents, with officials warning that security and diplomatic issues could affect the timeline. If approved, Cypriot travelers would benefit from passport‑free movement across the Schengen zone, boosting tourism and trade.
