Cyprus municipalities seek meeting over proposed central prison site

The municipalities of Latsia-Geri and South Nicosia-Idalion are seeking a meeting with the Minister of Justice regarding the proposed construction of new central prisons in the Agios Sozomenos area.

Local leaders, including Latsia-Geri Mayor Christos Pittaras, expressed concerns that the project was announced without sufficient consultation with the affected municipalities, which represent approximately 60,000 residents. The mayors noted that while previous proposals in Mati were subject to consultation, the current plan lacks similar engagement.

Additional concerns have been raised regarding the suitability of the site, specifically its proximity to a Natura 2000 protected area and an archaeological site. The municipalities believe the proposed construction is incompatible with the environmental and historical significance of the location.
